Anna University CGPA to Percentage — Regulation 2023

Anna University is the one large Indian university where the folklore is right: the conversion really is CGPA × 10, with nothing subtracted. Clause 21.10 of the 2023 regulations states it directly — “The percentage of marks shall be printed in the consolidated grade sheet from the CGPA earned using, % of Marks = CGPA × 10”.

These figures are for Regulation 2023. Anna University’s Regulation 2021 is published on a different server that could not be read when this page was built, so nothing here is claimed for R-2021 batches — check your own regulation before relying on it.

The grade table starts higher than you expect

Anna’s bands are not the usual ten-point ladder. S needs 91, not 90. B+ starts at 61 and B at 56 — a five-mark band, not ten. And the failing grade is U, not F.

If you have been reading a grade table from another university and assuming Anna matches, it does not.

The pass rule is stricter than most

Most Indian universities set the aggregate pass at 40%. Anna sets it at 50%. You need 45% of the end semester examination and 50% of the continuous assessment and end examination combined.

That single difference means a mark that would comfortably pass at JNTUH or VTU fails at Anna. It is the most consequential thing on this page.

Attendance — and why “condonation” is the wrong word here

Anna requires 75% in each course. What it does not have is a general condonation band you can apply into. What the regulations provide is narrower: a student with at least 65% attendance may have absence during a medical emergency excluded, on a certificate submitted within the stated window.

That is an exclusion of specific days for a specific reason, not a fee-based waiver of a shortfall. Below 75% without it, you are prevented from sitting the end semester examination for that course.

% — most Indian engineering colleges require 75%

Source: Anna University B.E./B.Tech Academic Regulations 2023, Revision 1 (official PDF) . Clauses 11.1, 11.2 and 11.4 of the 2023 regulations. Anna requires 75% in each course. There is no general condonation band: a student with at least 65% may have absence during a medical emergency excluded on a certificate submitted within the stated window, which is a different thing from a fee-based condonation. Below 75% without that exclusion, the student is barred from the end semester examination for that course. Checked 23 August 2026.

Condonation is permission, not a right — where a university offers it at all, it is granted on stated grounds, usually with a fee and an application through your college. Treat the middle band as “ask immediately”, not as “you are fine”.

Anna University CGPA questions

What is 8.5 CGPA in percentage at Anna University?

85%. Clause 21.10 gives a straight multiplication by ten with no offset, so the arithmetic is as simple as it looks. This is genuinely different from JNTUH, JNTUK and VTU, all of which subtract something first.

Is it GPA or SGPA at Anna University?

Anna calls the semester figure GPA rather than SGPA — clause 21.2. It is the same credit-weighted calculation other universities call SGPA, so if a form asks for your SGPA, your GPA is the number it means.

What does a U grade mean?

U is Anna’s re-appearance grade, awarded below 50%, carrying 0 grade points. It plays the role F plays elsewhere. SA means shortage of attendance and WC means withdrawal of course; both also carry 0.

Do I need 50% or 40% to pass?

50% of the total, combined with a separate 45% minimum in the end semester examination. Anna is stricter than most Indian universities on this, and a figure copied from a JNTUH or VTU page will understate what you need.

Does this apply to Regulation 2021?

No. Everything here is from Regulation 2023 (Revision 1, 2024). R-2021 is published on a separate university server that could not be read when this page was built, so nothing is claimed for R-2021 batches. Check your own regulation document.

Where these numbers come from

The conversion, grade table, attendance rule and pass criteria all come from Anna University’s own B.E./B.Tech Academic Regulations 2023, Revision 1, with the clause number beside each figure and the document linked.
