How CGPA is calculated in engineering
CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points across all semesters. It is not a simple average of your SGPAs — semesters carrying more credits count for more.
SGPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
The key consequence: a grade in a 4-credit subject counts twice as much as the same grade in a 2-credit subject. When revision time is short, the high-credit papers deserve it first.

CGPA to percentage: there is no single national formula
This is the most common source of confusion, and using the wrong formula on a job application can misstate your marks.
Below are conversions that get quoted for various universities. Only the JNTUH row has been checked against the university’s own published regulations. The rest are widely repeated online but are not verified here — treat them as a starting point for your own search, not as fact.

Note: JNTUH, JNTUK and JNTUA are separate universities with separate regulation books. Do not assume the JNTUH rule applies to the others.
Always check your own university’s academic regulations before quoting a percentage. If your transcript states a conversion, use that one — a recruiter comparing your stated percentage against your transcript will notice a mismatch. This guide explains how to find the right clause.
What is a good CGPA in engineering?
- 9.0+ — Top of the class. Opens research, higher studies and premium product-company shortlists.
- 8.0–8.9 — Strong. Clears the cutoff at nearly every campus recruiter.
- 7.0–7.9 — Solid. Clears most service-company cutoffs, which commonly sit around 6.0–6.5.
- 6.0–6.9 — Acceptable, but you will be filtered out of some campus drives. Compensate with projects and internships.
- Below 6.0 — Several recruiters filter automatically. Portfolio and demonstrated skill matter far more here.
Worth saying plainly: after your first job, almost nobody asks. CGPA is a filter for your first role, not a verdict on your career.
Frequently asked questions
Is SGPA the same as CGPA?
No. SGPA covers one semester. CGPA covers every semester completed so far, weighted by credits.
How much does a backlog hurt?
An F carries 0 grade points but its credits still count in the denominator. A failed 4-credit subject alongside a 4-credit O gives (40 + 0) ÷ 8 = 5.00, not 10. Clearing a backlog lifts your CGPA more than an extra good grade elsewhere.
Can I calculate CGPA without knowing credits?
Only approximately. Without credits you can average grade points, but the result differs from your official CGPA whenever subjects carry unequal weight.
