A course grade is almost never a plain average. Assignments might carry 20%, a mid-term 30%, a lab 10% and the final exam 40% — and averaging those four scores as if they were equal gives a number that is simply wrong.
Add each component with the weight your course actually gives it, and this works out the real total.
If your weights do not add to 100. That is worth checking before you trust any total. Either a component is missing, or your course really does mark out of a different total — some do. This tool divides by whatever your weights actually add up to and tells you what that figure is, so you can see which of the two it is instead of guessing.
The one thing most weighted-grade tools hide
This calculator tells you what your weights add up to. Most do not — they quietly divide by whatever total you gave them and print a confident-looking result.
That matters because weights totalling 90 or 110 are the single most common reason a student’s own arithmetic disagrees with their transcript. When it happens, there are only two possibilities:
- A component is missing. Something on the syllabus is not in your list. The total shown will move once you add it.
- Your course really does mark out of a different total. Some genuinely do, and there is nothing wrong with that.
A tool that normalises the mistake away lets you finish the calculation without ever learning which of the two you are looking at. This one shows you the figure so you can check.
How the maths works
Every component contributes its score multiplied by its weight. Add those products, then divide by the total of the weights:
weighted total = sum of (score × weight) ÷ sum of the weights
A worked example
Assignments 80% at a weight of 30, and a mid-term 60% at a weight of 70:
- 80 × 30 = 2,400
- 60 × 70 = 4,200
- Total 6,600, divided by 100 = 66%
A plain average of 80 and 60 would have given 70%. The four-point gap is the mid-term’s weight doing its work, and it is exactly the kind of gap that turns a first into a second.
Which component is worth your time
The calculator names the component carrying the most weight, because that is where an extra ten marks moves your total furthest. Ten marks gained on something worth 10% moves your final grade by one point. The same ten marks on something worth 50% moves it by five.
When revision time is short — and it usually is — that ratio is the only sensible basis for deciding what to open first.
Scores as marks rather than percentages
Enter scores as percentages. If your marks come as a fraction of a fixed total, convert first: marks scored ÷ marks possible × 100. A lab report scored 34 out of 40 goes in as 85.
