Every placement season produces the same two questions in the same week: what CGPA do I need, and am I finished if I am below it.

The honest answer to the first is that there is no single number, and anyone who gives you one is quoting a company they once heard about. The useful answer is understanding how eligibility criteria are actually constructed, because once you see the structure you can work out where you stand and what is worth doing about it.

Where the cutoff actually comes from

A CGPA cutoff is not set by your university. It is set by the recruiting company, per role, per year, and communicated to your placement cell in the job description they circulate before the drive.

That has three consequences students routinely miss.

It varies between companies in the same drive season, sometimes sharply, and between roles at the same company. A core engineering role and a services role advertised by one employer can carry different criteria.

It varies year to year at the same company, depending on how many people they are hiring. A cutoff from your senior’s batch is a data point, not a rule.

The authoritative version is the JD your placement cell circulates. Not a WhatsApp forward, not a Quora answer, not last year’s. Read the actual document each time.

The criteria that are not CGPA

CGPA gets the attention, but eligibility is usually a set of conditions joined by AND, and people are more often excluded by the others.

Active backlogs

A very common clause is a bar on current backlogs at the time of the drive — sometimes phrased as “no active backlogs”, sometimes as a cap on history. This is frequently a harder gate than the CGPA line, and unlike CGPA it can often be cleared before the season if you plan supplementary attempts early. If you have arrears, this is the single highest-value thing to work on.

10th and 12th (or diploma) marks

Many criteria include a floor on school-level percentages. This one is immovable, and it is worth knowing where you stand on it before you build expectations around a particular employer.

Gaps in education

Some criteria specify a maximum permitted break between qualifications. If you have one, find out early which employers treat it as disqualifying rather than discovering it at the eligibility screen.

Branch and specialisation

Obvious, but drives are frequently open only to a listed subset of branches, and the list changes.

What CGPA does after the cutoff

Here is the part that reframes the question. For most processes, CGPA functions as a filter rather than a score. It decides whether you sit the test. It does not usually decide whether you clear the test.

Once you are through the eligibility screen, what typically determines the outcome is the aptitude or coding round, then technical interviews, then HR. A candidate at the cutoff who performs in those rounds beats a candidate well above it who does not.

So the strategic reading is: CGPA is worth protecting because it buys you access to a larger set of doors. It is not worth treating as the thing that gets you hired once you are inside one.

If you are below the line

Four things that actually change the position, roughly in order of leverage.

Clear backlogs first. Higher impact than CGPA improvement, usually faster, and it unlocks criteria that are otherwise a hard no.

Work out whether the number is still reachable. This is arithmetic, not vibes. With your current CGPA, completed credits and remaining semesters, there is a definite maximum you can reach and a definite required average per remaining semester. Calculate it. If the answer is “you would need 9.5 in every remaining semester”, you now know to spend your effort elsewhere; if it is “8.2 for two semesters”, that is a plan.

Build the evidence that substitutes for it. Off-campus and referral routes weigh a working project, a repository someone can read, an internship or a demonstrable skill far more heavily than campus criteria do. This is also where the majority of hiring outside campus drives actually happens.

Do not skip the drives you are eligible for while chasing the ones you are not. The most common regret is having spent the season on a shortlist of aspirational companies and having sat almost no processes.

The number that matters on your CV

One practical detail. Different employers ask for CGPA, some ask for percentage, and the conversion between them is set by your own university’s regulation — a formula published in your academic regulations, which differs between universities. Do not use a generic multiplier you found online, and do not convert one way on your resume and another way in an application form. Use your regulation’s stated formula, and use it consistently.

Placement eligibility questions

What CGPA is needed for campus placements?

There is no universal figure. Each company sets its own cutoff per role and per year, and it reaches you through the job description your placement cell circulates. Read that document rather than relying on last year’s number.

Do backlogs matter more than CGPA?

Often, yes. Many criteria include a hard bar on active backlogs, which excludes you regardless of CGPA. Clearing arrears is usually the highest-leverage thing a student below the line can do before a placement season.

Can I still get a job with a low CGPA?

Campus eligibility filters are one route into employment, not the only one. Off-campus applications, referrals and internships weight demonstrable work far more heavily. A low CGPA narrows the campus route; it does not close the others.

How much can I realistically raise my CGPA?

That is a calculation, not a guess: it depends on your current CGPA, credits already completed and semesters remaining. Work out the required average per remaining semester before deciding whether to make it your focus.

Should I put CGPA or percentage on my resume?

Whatever the application asks for, converted using your own university’s published formula — conversion rules differ between universities. Keep it consistent across your resume and every form you fill.
